Pierre (auch Pietro) Dandini, 1646 Florenz – 1712 ebenda, zugeschrieben THE TRIUMPH OF DAVID Oil on canvas. Doubled. 117 x 172 cm. In gilt frame. In the centre of the painting, before the gates of the city wall visible on the right, the young David seated beside the king in a golden chariot with a team of four, holding in his right hand the large head of the slain giant Goliath. Behind him and to the sides of the chariot numerous soldiers in armor with spears also returning from the battle. On the right side of the picture numerous women in noble garments dancing and playing music, joyfully welcoming the returning soldiers. Among the women a harpist, a woman with flute and others with violin and tambourine. At the lower left side of the picture another woman in shining garment, holding a naked boy on a white sheet. High-quality painting with strong light-dark contrasts, various pieces of clothing especially emphasized by colour and gloss. Occasional rests, retouchings. Note: Stylistic and compositional similarities exist with the painting "The Coronation of Bacchus", which was auctioned at Sotheby's in New York on 30 January 2016 under lot. 702 sold at auction.
