Lombardischer Maler des 17. Jahrhunderts THE MARTYRIUM OF HOLY STEPHANUS Oil on canvas. Doubled. 126 x 93 cm. In gilt state frame. In the New Testament, Saint Stephen is a deacon of the early Jerusalem church. He was accused before the High Council and defended himself, moreover he says "I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God." With these words he made the members of the council so angry that they ordered him to be stoned before the city. The painting shows the saint in the white dalmatic of a deacon, in a strongly moving posture with his left arm raised and his gaze turned to heaven, in which he sees God the Father and Jesus, partly wrapped in a flowing white robe and holding a large wooden cross in his left arm. In addition, two flying putti, one holding a crown and a martyr's palm, one of the saint's attributes. On the left a soldier on horseback in armour, who gives the order for stoning, which is carried out on the right by two strong men with raised arms, holding large stones. Strongly moving depiction, in which the saint is particularly emphasized by his white and gold clothing, while in the background buildings of the city can be seen. Retouching.
