James Ensor, 1860 Ostende – 1949 ebenda, zugeschrieben/ Kreis des ON THE EDGE OF A FOREST Oil on canvas. 40 x 50 cm. Signed "J. Ensor" lower left. View from an elevated vantage point of a meadow bordered on the left by a field of low shrubs, in the background by dark green trees and on the right by tall yellow-green trees. The sky in a light white-grey, darkening towards the top. Painting in a rapid, partly impasto brushstroke, in which the figurativeness is almost cancelled out in favour of an atmospheric yellow-greenish colour effect and creation of atmosphere. Note: Rather rare motif by the artist. A similar work entitled "L'Orée de la Forét" was offered for auction at De Vuyst in Lokeren on 05.03.2016, another, titled "A l'orée du bois" at Campo in Antwerp on 23.04.2002.
