VIEW OF THE SUMMER AMALFIC COAST Oil on canvas.
82.5 x 70.5 cm.
Signed "F. R. Unterberger" lower left.
In gilt frame.
On a light stone terrace, to which a narrow path lined with palms and cacti leads up some steps, three elegantly dressed ladies with hats, one of them holding a parasol and looking, partly over the parapet, at the picturesque Amalfi coast. The sea in numerous pastel shades, glowing from white to delicate pink to soft turquoise-green. Next to it the town lying on the shore with predominantly white and pink houses, below a high mountain range in restrained soft beige-brown and reddish tones. The sky entirely in light blue with spotted white smaller and larger cloud spots partly reflected in the water. Atmospheric Italian summer impression in delicate pastel tones, with mostly loose impasto application of paint.
Note:
The artist was a Tyrolean landscape painter. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich he was a pupil at the Düsseldorf Academy under Andreas Achenbach (1815-1910) from 1860-1864 and later a private pupil of Oswald Achenbach (1827-1905). Towards the end of the 1860s he also travelled through southern Italy, where he created numerous paintings. The sunny coastal landscapes of the Adriatic, but also Venice, soon became the focus of Unterberger's artistic work. (1291913) (18)
