Pierre Legrain, Art Deco candlestickHeight: 17.8 cm. Width: 34,8 cm. France, first half of the 20th century. Solid sculptural work in solid wood, on rectangular base with symmetrical structure and three focal points with horizontal eaves bowls. The object breathes the spirit of Pierre Legrain- whose life was a succession of decisive encounters: the illustrator Paul Iribe, the couturier Jacques Doucet, for whom he designed bindings and frames for his famous collection of modern art, and African-Cubist furniture for his "atelier" on Rue Saint-James in Neuilly, the milliner Jeanne Tachard, the journalist Maurice Martin du Gard, the Noailles, the whimsical Elsie de Wolfe, Marie Bonaparte, and the merchant César de Hauke, who opened the doors to the American market for him. Pierre Legrain, a founding member of the UAM, was a major player in the emerging modernism of the 1920s. Nice wear patina. (1291181) (13)
