THE LION OF LUCERNE. Bronze subject with dark patina. 9 x 15.5 x Ht. 9 cm. B.E. Designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen, then sculpted between 1820 and 1821 by Lukas Ahorn, the "Lion of Lucerne" monument commemorates the officers and hundreds of soldiers of the Swiss Guards regiment who died in 1792 in the service of the French king, Louis XVI, when the revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris.
