FEMALE MASK FROM THE NOH THEATER
in white lacquered wood with black and red highlights, probably representing Waka-Onna, which means "young woman", with red lips opened wide enough, revealing white teeth, formerly blackened; the reverse, natural, bearing the incised mark 'Hôrai', referring to a famous artist of the 15th century.
(Soiling of the white on the face, wear of the black, notably at the level of the wicks framing the face, erased; lips relaqued, resumption of the black on the hair).
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912).
A LACQUERED WOOD MASK, JAPAN, MEIJI PERIOD.
HEIGHT. 19,4 CM (7 5/8 IN.)
