Johannes Wierix (1539-1620) Lot n° 21

Johannes Wierix - Christ on the cross - unrecorded in literature / Description: Christ on the cross with and oval halo encircled by clouds. This is a very rare print, not mentioned in literature, not know by Mauqouy Hendrickx, not in the British Museum, nor in the Rijksmuseum. It seems to be a youth work by Johan Wierix, both the brothers Johan and Hieronymus found a challenge to compete with the greatest masters of their time by making copies of their work at a very young age. (12 in Hieronymus's case, and 14 in Johannes ) They added their age AE 12 in several cases, especially on prints made after Albrecht Durer. Here the source is not know. Seen the rarity and the inscription AEBR 12 - Joha Wierix in the text line, this might be an unknown early work by Johan Wierix. / Dimensions: 8,00 cm x 4,90 / Condition: Excellent condition with no folds, tears or stains. Good impression trimmed on plate border and pasted on an old collectors sheet. / Literature: Unknown to MH, not in British Museum or Rijksmuseum. / Medium: Engraving /Circa: 1550-1600
