Akan, Ghana
Ohne Sockel / without base

Provenance:
- Gallery Walu, Zurich.
- Helmut (1931-2021) and Marianne Zimmer, Zurich.
The term Adinkra refers to pictograms originating from Ghana, originally created by the Akan and Baule peoples.
They often decorate fabrics, but also pottery. Wooden sculptures and facades.
In addition to the decorative aspect, they each have their own precisely defined meaning and are thus signs readable by initiates.
On the fabrics, the motifs are traditionally impregnated with calabash stamps soaked in a plant dye.
The slightly curved shape of the stamps allows the dye to be applied by a tilting motion performed by hand.
