This unique Harley is called XL like all the 1000cc bikes of the range and CR like Café Racer. At the end of the 70's in the United States, the Café Racer was a new fashion for customized motorcycles that resembled the European sport bikes that had to push hard to start in front of the snack bars with a stripped down presentation. Harley-Davidson wanted to offer a machine capable of stopping the Japanese invasion, countering the Italian hegemony on its territory and offering a sporty bike to the American clientele, while taking up the concept of modified English motorcycles. From 1977 to 1979, 3,133 units were produced. The example we present is sound but needs some work to be put back on the road. It is equipped with a Japanese KEIHIN carburetor of diameter 38 with butterfly, 2 brake discs at the front and one at the rear. We enclose with the bike a copy of the MOTO JOURNAL magazine of January 5, 1978 containing a 16 pages technical data essay on the machine.
