After David Teniers the Younger,  Flemish 1610-1690-  An Allegory of the Four Seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter;  oils on panel, each bears monogram 'Dt.F' (lower left, 'Winter' lower right), the first bears an old label attached to the reverse of the panel, each 17.6 x 12.5 cm., a set of four (4) in common mount. (VAT charged on hammer price).  Note: Several sets of the ‘Allegory of the Four Seasons’ were produced by Teniers himself in around 1644. See, for example, Anon. sale, Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 22 May 1990, lot 34; Anon. sale, Christie’s, Amsterdam, 20 November 2012, lot 26; and The National Gallery, London [NG857-NG860]. Each are similar in design to the present works but differ in compositional details. In the present works by one of Teniers’ many followers, the artist, as in the originals, has appropriated human forms to embody the essence of the four seasons: ‘Spring’ is a gardener carrying a young orange tree to plant in a formal garden; ‘Summer’ is a farmer harvesting the crop; ‘Autumn’ is an inn-keeper crowned with a wreath of vine branches and raising a glass of wine; and ‘Winter’ is an elderly bearded man in a fur cap and robe standing before a frozen village skating scene, with his coal brazier further emphasising the hardships of the season.  Please refer to department for condition report
