Giuseppe Costa, Italian 1852-1912- The new arrival; oil on canvas, signed and inscribed 'G Costa Firenze' (lower left), 73 x 106.5 cm. Provenance: With Frost and Reed, London, 1964 & 1974 [no.34982/C518].; Corporate Collection, UK. Note: Naples born Costa trained in the local Academy of Fine Arts under Domenico Morelli (1823-1901). In the present work, family members look adoringly on as they are introduced to the new-born child. Situated in the intimate and domestic setting of the family home, the atmosphere is one of warmth and congeniality.
