The new arrival;

Note: Naples born Costa trained in the local Academy of Fine Arts under Domenico Morelli (1823-1901). In the present work, family members look adoringly on as they are introduced to the new-born child. Situated in the intimate and domestic setting of the family home, the atmosphere is one of warmth and congeniality. See Anon. sale, Bonhams, London, 1 March 2017, lot 41 for a similarly ambitious example of the artist's work, also on a grand scale. Among the titles of his others works are 'The Userer and his Victims', 'Two Orphan Girls', 'Distraction', 'After Work', 'Innocuous Love', 'Need and Modesty'.
