Full 18th century pastiche speckled calf (Riviere & Son). Spine with 5 nerves richly decorated with gilded boxes and fleurons. Title and author's pieces in red morocco. Triple gilt fillet framing the dishes. Gilt lace on the edges and on the back covers. Slight rubbing to the spines, otherwise a very elegant copy. Very rare first edition. According to Todd (The first editions of The good natur'd man and She stoops to conquer, Studies in Bibliography, vol. 11(1958), pp. 132-42), 2nd printing (second issue): "with half-title, p.8 is not numbered and the running title reads: She stoops to conquer:".
