LA ROCHEFOUCAULD François de Memoirs Paris, Renouard, An XII - 1804 In-12°. Full contemporary red morocco with the coat of arms of Count Grigori Alexandrovitch Stroganov (1770-1857), diplomat, very cultured man and great patron of the arts in his time. Smooth spine very richly decorated and gilt. Beautifully surrounded by a double and wide gilt lace framing the arms of the count (name in Cyrillic). Gilt chain on the edges and on the back covers. All edges gilt. Some rubbing to the spine (gilt in places), to the edges and to the spines. Spine lightened. A neat and uncommon edition, decorated with a portrait of the author engraved by Saint-Aubin after Monsiau and 6 out-of-text portraits of characters of the Grand Siècle (minor foxing): Mazarin, le Grand Condé, Louis XIV, etc. Copy printed on beautiful vellum paper. A very nice copy! Provenance: Count Grigori Alexandrovitch Stroganov library with armorial bookplate bearing his motto: "Terram opes patriae sibi nomen" - Unidentified Russian library (stamp on title page)
