Nineteenth century school, after Antonio ALLEGRI, known as Correggio
The Adoration of the Child
Oil on panel
Collection stamp in wax on the back
54.5 x 44.5 cm
(accidents, restorations)
The painting is based on the canvas conserved in the Galleria delle Office in Florence (inv. 1890 n.1453), executed by Correggio in 1518-20. A kneeling young Mary contemplates the child, who is holding out her hand to her mother, in a sequence of gestures and glances characterized by a growing gentleness and chromatic finesse, typical elements of the Emilian painter's innovation.
