French school of the 18th century, entourage of Jean-Baptiste JOUVENET
The Deploration of Christ
Oil on canvas, lined
150.5 x 119.5 cm
(accidents, restorations)
The artist who executed the Deploration must have been familiar with the teachings of the French painter Jean-Baptiste Jouvenet (1644-1717), probably having seen his Deposition from the Cross, or one of the many versions, dating from the first quarter of the 18th century.
The body of Christ, drawn in bold foreshortening, pale and lifeless as a marble sculpture, guides the viewer's gaze to the face of the suffering mother who holds him in her lap. Magdalene and St. John participate in this pain with charged gestures, but despite these intense feelings the composition is treated with balance and geometry.
