The first part of volume 1 is devoted to the Italian campaigns, from 1797 to 1801, during which Berthézene was wounded twice and was appointed to the rank of battalion commander, at the age of 25.
His brilliant military career continued in Prussia (1806-1808). He then relates the expedition of the English against Antwerp (1809). The Russian campaign is abundantly told at the end of volume 1 and in the first half of volume 2. His memories continue with the campaign of 1813 and end with an important chapter on Waterloo, a campaign in which he had two horses killed under him.
