EARLY XVIIth - EARLY XVIIIth CENTURY Eucharistic pelican Carved and gilded wood group with red highlights. The pelican, a figure of great symbolism, was used to preserve the Blessed Sacrament on Holy Thursday. Its origin is a medieval legend that tells that the pelican fed its chicks with the blood it obtained from its chest with its own beak in times of scarcity. In the same way, Jesus Christ offered us his own body and blood in the Eucharist.
