Greek art from the 4th - 3rd century B.C. Remarkable gold sconce from the late classical or early hellenistic period representing the satyr Silenus, minor god of drunkenness. The face is represented from the front, with a serious expression and frowning. The repoussé treatment with fine incisions allows a very fine and realistic rendering of the hair, the beard and the horns. Gold, 7gr. 7 x 6,5 cm. 4 discreet holes for the fixings. It is probably a jewel intended to be sewn on clothes or a decoration for a military harness, a chariot or an ornament for a domestic object like a box. Earthy adhesions; small hole in the left lacrimal eye and on the right eyebrow, however excellent state of preservation. A rare and exceptional piece as much by its size; indeed ancient gold objects rarely exceed 2-3 cm; as by the quality of the execution. Provenance : acquired from PHOENIX ANCIENT ART in Geneva in 2011 (a copy of the invoice can be given to the buyer) The work has an export license.
