HUGO Victor (1802-1885).
Original DRAWING, Paysage au burg, 1842; signed and dated lower right "V.H. 20 7bre 1842"; brown ink wash, pen and brown ink on paper; 9 x 18.7 cm.
Beautiful landscape.
A medieval castle, on the shore of a lake or a river on which is a sailboat; in the foreground, a row of trees goes down to the water, on the edge of which one guesses some thatched cottages. A part of the water is left in reserve, creating a beautiful effect of light. Victor Hugo's landscapes are sometimes topographical, but they are often fantasy. It seems that this landscape is more of a fantasy than a travel memory. The drawing is to be compared with those made in his notebooks, during the trip on the Rhine, the account of which, The Rhine, was published in that year 1842.
