Apollonio Facchinetti, genannt „Domenichini“, tätig 1740 – 1770 CANAL GRANDE FROM PALAZZO MORO LIN AND THE CA' FOSCARI WITH VIEW OF THE CHURCH DELLA CARITÀOil on canvas. 55 x 83 cm. Attached an expertise of Dr. Federica Spadotto, Padua, November 22, 2021. The work will be included in the monograph in preparation. The view leads from the center of the Grand Canal, with the rows of buildings lining the sides - backwards to the slight bend, looking at the façade of the Church della Carità, still highly Gothic at the time the painting was created. The left row of houses is in the afternoon light, the right shows shaded facades, alternating with brightly lit building corners. On Palazzo Moro Lin, with its arcaded arches, a striped awning is unrolled over the balconies, as on other buildings. On the darkly shimmering canal water, barges, sailing ships and gondolas are bustling with activity, with rich figural scenery. Apollonio Facchinetti, also called Domenichini after the first name of his father Domenico (1669-1743), was formerly known as the "Master of the Fondazione Langmatt". Thirteen vedute of the Langmatt Foundation in Baden have led to the naming of the painter after Dario Succi's suggestion. His name was discovered through the correspondence between the British minister Sir John Strange and the Venetian painting agent Maria Sasso. As a vedutist, Apollonio probably devoted himself exclusively to the city of Venice. He was probably a pupil of Carlevari (1663/65-1729/31), Francesco Albotto (1721/22-1757), or Michele Giovanni Marieschi (1696/1710-1743). The period between 1740 and 1750, when Canaletto (1697-1768) was in England, was of great benefit to Apollonio, as he was now extremely popular with the travelers of the Grand Tour with his vedute. At several exhibitions, the recognition of the works in the style comparison to Apollonio became more and more precise. The painting is also related to an etching by Antonio Canaletto, published in the "Prospectus" for the English consul Smith, as the first inspiration for the present painting. The painting is in excellent condition. A.R. Literature: See Gertrude Borghero (ed.), Venice Myth. Venetian Vedute of the 18th Century, Milan 1994. Cf. Federica Spadotto, Io sono '700.
