CHATEAUBRIAND (François-René de). MEMOIRES D'OUTRE-TOMBE. Paris, Eugène et Victor Penaud, 1849-1850. 12 volumes in-8, half green chagrin, spine with ornate nerves (19th century binding). ORIGINAL EDITION of the first issue of one of the most important texts of French literature. The copy is complete with the list of subscribers, the letter of Chateaubriand to M. Delloye and the Foreword. "Chateaubriand died on July 4, 1848. Having mortgaged his tomb, by the sale of his Memoirs to a limited company in return for a life annuity of 12,000 francs, the Press published them in serial form; the Penaud brothers began their edition, which alone is the original, in January 1849 and finished it in October 1850. (Escoffier, the romantic movement n°1833). The volumes are enriched with the suite of 25 (out of 30) figures on steel by Staal or Moraine that appeared in Penaud's edition in 6 volumes.
