BRUCE (James). A JOURNEY TO THE SOURCES OF THE NIL, in Nubia and Abyssinia during the years 1768, 1769, 1770, 1771 and 1772. Translated from the English by J. H. Castera. Paris, Hôtel de Thou, 1790-92. 5 volumes of text and an atlas, that is to say 6 volumes in-4°, basane, spine ribbed and decorated (period binding). First edition of the French translation by Castéra, much sought after according to Chadenat. Scottish explorer and geographer, James Bruce undertook as consul of Algiers a journey in Northern Africa, in search of the sources of the Nile. His journey is illustrated with 88 plates (including 4 large folding maps), showing views, genre scenes, botany, antiquities and natural history, writing...etc. The fifth volume contains a report by William Paterson entitled Four journeys to the country of the Hottentots and the Cafreria in 1777, 1778, 1779. Freckles and several pages browned, large restored spalls on the boards. The binding of the atlas is different from that of the text. (Chadenat, 1062).
