Karl Liebknecht Bronze with dark brown patina on stone base. 1957. Approx. 37 x 19 x 23,5 cm. Signed on the reverse at the bottom of the shirt collar "W. ARNOLD" (scratched). Literature: Gerhard Pommeranz-Liedtke (editor), Walter Arnold, exhibition on his 50th birthday, Ausst.-Kat., Deutsche Akademie der Künste zu Berlin/Nationalgalerie Berlin-Ost, Berlin 1959, cat.-no. 55; Gerhard Kettner, Walter Arnold, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Ausst.-Kat. Albertinum Dresden, Dresden 1960, no. 56 (m. ill.); Horst Jähner (ed.), Walter Arnold, 16 color reproductions, Welt der Kunst, Berlin 1961, p. 27 (m. ill.). Our copy in an excellent cast with vividly designed patina, total height with base approx. 43 cm. Arnold uses the bust of Karl Liebknecht to express the moment of militancy, just as the prominent socialist used to agitate in the streets, appear in the Reichstag and at demonstrations. The head is strictly structured, the physiognomy speaks for Liebknecht's indomitable willpower. The outline of the face is tightly rendered, this striking form continues in the neck and is completed by the collar and bow tie, characteristic clothing attributes of the socialist. Other casts can be found in the Berlin National Gallery (Inv.-no. B I 713) and in the Dresden State Art Collections, Sculpture Collection (Inv.-no. ZV 3679).
