"Hot City"
2 compositions recto/verso. Watercolor on wove paper. 1966.
32.1 x 43.6 cm.
Signed "Bargheer" and dated in pencil lower center, titled, dated, inscribed and with measurements in pencil on verso.
Provenance: Private collection Southern Germany.
In our sheet, Bargheer captures his impressions of one of his numerous trips to North and Central Africa, which he undertook between 1960 and 1968, in his unmistakable mosaic-like, abstracting pictorial vocabulary and light brushstrokes. He translates the visual experience into a symbolic representation, concentrating on the essentials and making hidden motif structures visible. The result is a formal network of relationships that the artist himself describes as a "fabric".
