Beach Drypoint on Japan. 1922. 21,4 x 32,6 cm (29,5 x 44 cm). Signed "Beckmann". Edition of 50 copies. Hofmaier 239 B a (of d). Excellent impression with delicately drawn platemark and the full margin, below with the scoop margin. One of 50 copies on Japan, part of which numbered "X/XV" by Günther Franke, published by R. Piper & Co, Munich 1922. According to Hofmaier, a print exists with the handwritten note that the image is a coastal piece of the island of Wangerooge. "The sea, which was of such elementary importance to Beckmann throughout his life, an expression of the infinity of space and time, is only depicted in a few graphic works, such as on the beach of 1922" (quoted from Christiane Zeiller, speech for the exhibition "Max Beckmann, Graphik," Munich 2007).
