Excellent impression with full margins, on two sides with the scoop margin. Renowned French art dealer Ambroise Vollard commissioned Marc Chagall to illustrate Jean de La Fontaine's "Fables" in 1927. The Fables is one of three major illustration cycles by Chagall for the art dealer, but he died in 1939 before completing it. The work that was begun was not published until 1952 by Tériade in Paris. The etchings were printed by Maurice Potin, Paris, the present work is sheet 3 from the first volume of the numbered and signed edition.
