Skull of ichthyosaur: Stenopterygius megacephalus. Dating from the Mesozoic Era, Lower Jurassic (180 million years) From Holzmaden in Germany. Size of the plate : 63cmX31cmX5cm Size of the skull : 57cmX25cm. Museum quality. From the private collection of the Hauff family. The extinct genus of ichthyosaur reached a maximum length of 4 meters. It was found in a very important and special layer called Fleins. In this layer, the Holzmaden fossils have the best possible quality. The skull is elongated, the stretching of the snout is formed mainly from the premaxilla. The orbit is very large and solid sclerotic plates can be seen. The teeth are pointed and are located on the edge of the jaws, aligned (originally) in grooves.
