Romeyn De Hooghe (1645-1708) after Adam Frans Van der Meulen (1634-1690)
Entry of the King into Dunquerque (Dunkirk)
Burin engraving on paper
49,5 x 133 cm
On June 25, 1658, at the end of the Battle of the Dunes, which saw the Spanish confronting the French, English and Dutch coalition, Dunkirk changed sovereignty: Spanish in the morning, French at noon, and finally English in the evening, since Louis XIV handed it over to the English the same day. This was one of the last episodes of the Franco-Spanish war, which began in 1635. In 1662, Charles II of England sold Dunkirk to Louis XIV for five million pounds. The king made his "joyful entry" on December 2, as illustrated in this engraving.
