More than to Carpeaux, as the erroneous mention on the cartouche indicates, it is to the style of the Béziers-born sculptor Injalbert that we must attribute this charming bust of a child with sparkling eyes and a broad smile. This theme of the laughing child occupied the artist for many years between 1875 and 1927. He declined it in several formats and in various materials. The artist tells us that he met the child who served as a model in the street in Rome in 1875. First Prize of Rome in 1874, he chose this subject for his compulsory submission of "tête d'étude" for his third year at the Academy.
