39. Francesco Guiseppe CASANOVA (1727-1802), attributed to. Suite of three animated landscapes: Herdsmen (2);Passage of the river. Oils on canvas, not signed. (Cracks visible on one, old lining). 55 x 135 cm. Born in London and died in Brühl near Vienna, Casanova was born of Italian parents and received all his artistic training in Venice. A student of Guardi and then Parrocel in Paris, he lived in Dresden, London, Vienna and then in Russia where he painted for Catherine II. Known for his landscapes in which animals are represented, we find the Dutch influence of Wouverman whom he often copied during his stay in Vienna.
