MONSTRANCE WITH WINGED HORSES Spain, 16th century
Vermeil; glass
H. 63.5 cm, W. 21.5 cm, D. 21.5cm
This monstrance, made of cast silver, chased and gilded, presents a rich architectural decoration, highlighted by arabesques. A triangular baldachin with baluster shafts, housing a bell, crowns the glass cage which rests on a high three-node foot resting on a tripod molded base, decorated with leafy lion paws and winged horses.
At the top, rises an allegory of the Religion surrounded by three small loves.
In the center, the display part is flanked by columns with double Doric and Ionic capitals, topped by an entablature and a vase. Inside, two chimeras support the crescent moon-shaped support.
Our monstrance, with its perfectly balanced proportions and its openwork decoration, testifies to the exceptional skill of Renaissance silversmiths.
