MOUNTED VASE IN EGYPTIAN PORPHYRY Porphyry vase : Italy, 17th century
Mounting : France, 18th century
Base : Paris, circa 1760
Egyptian red porphyry ; chased and gilt bronze ; ebony and gilt bronze
H. 35,5 cm, W. 15 cm, D. 15 cm
This vase in red Egyptian porphyry was made in the 17th century. Of ovoid form, on a pedestal and a square base, it presents an ornamentation of gilded bronze composed of two handles with finely chiseled scrolls emerging from two leaves ending in a cluster and a frieze of water leaves at the base of the body.
Our vase rests on a square ebony and gilt bronze base decorated with flowered posts, similar to the one executed by Joseph Baumhauer for a "Geoffrin" clock in the Wrightsman collection, now in the
Metropolitan (fig. 1).
