PAIR OF CONSOLES with passementerie decoration
Piedmont, second quarter of the 18th century
Gilded wood; onyx
H. 88 cm, W. 117 cm, D. 59 cm
This pair of consoles, with its curved and counter-curved legs terminating in goat hooves, testifies to the penetration of French rocaille into the Italian decorative arts. Its marble top rests on a scalloped belt. A small table from the former royal collection of the House of Savoy has the same type of passementerie decoration (fig. 1). It can be found on another model with strongly arched legs, decorated with acanthus leaves and connected, as here, by a brace (fig. 2).
On our consoles, the foliage is enriched with rows of pearls and flowers; the mantling is centered with motifs of gems in relief and the terrace of the brace is adorned with a feather. Two onyx trays crown the pair.
