Livio Mehus (Oudenarde 1630 circa - Florence 1691) Penitent Magdalene Oil on panel 70 x 52 cm Livio Mehus, painter of Flemish origin, distinguished himself as an original and eclectic painter for having painted landscapes, sacred subjects, genre paintings and portraits. His training in Italy took place in Rome, with Pietro da Cortona. He perfectly embodied the spirit and the figurative arts of the late Baroque with his art tending to the oneiric deformation of the characters, wrapped in leaden environments. He was one of the most important followers of Cortona with regard to the paintings of sacred character, along with Ciro Ferri, the Volterrano, Giovan Battista Foggini and Raffaello Vanni. He lived periods of restless life moving to Lucca, Genoa, Milan and Venice, where he had the opportunity to come into contact with the painting of Titian and Tintoretto, from which absorbed the violent brightness. Appreciated by the Grand Prince Ferdinando de' Medici and by the nobility of the time, Livio Mehus left numerous works, now in the Galleria Palatina, the Uffizi and Palazzo Pitti in Florence, as well as in the Poldi Pezzoli Museum, the Louvre, the Courtauld Institute, and many other places.
