We thank Professor Michele Danieli for providing the attribution of the painting, defining it as: very dirty but of precious quality.
In 1678, Malvasia considered Francesco Cavazzoni as a pupil of Bartolomeo Passarotti, and later as a member of the Carracci school, a fact confirmed by the engraving Nomina clarorum virorum dedicated to him by Agostino Carracci in 1590. In 1592 he painted on commission of Cesare d'Este the Goddess Opi (now lost) for the ceiling of the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara. He spent the rest of his life in Bologna, working as a writer and as a painter: in the city today are preserved in churches four of his works and a Crucifixion at the Pinacoteca Nazionale.
