Inscription on the reverse: "Le Chevr. de Pecauld / Captain of artillery / aged 34 years 1784 / died Colonel on March 16 / 1787 / painted by Wyrsch" Height 44 Width 35 cm (small uprising, small chips in the frame). Provenance: acquired from the Joseph Han gallery, Paris, in 1973, by the present owners. An 18th century portrait of Chevalier de Pecauld, Knight of Saint-Louis, by Johann Melchior Wyrsch. Oil on canvas. Claude-Michel-Catherine de Pecauld (1750-1787), born in Arbois (Jura), son of the governor of the city, student on June 19, 1767, second lieutenant on October 16, 1767, then first on August 11, 1768, second captain in the Metz artillery regiment on April 5, 1780, brigade commander in the Colonial Artillery Regiment on November 1, 1784 with the rank of major. He died at the Royal Fort of Martinique on March 16, 1787. On our portrait, he wears the Cross of Saint Louis of which he was made Knight on November 19, 1784.
