GIOVANNI FRANCESCO GRIMALDI (attr. a)
(Bologna, 1605/1606 - 1680)
Diana and Callisto
Oil on canvas, 97X134 cm
The painting describes a landscape type typical of the Roman school and dates to the late 17th century. Indeed, the influences of the ideal landscape inaugurated by Annibale Carracci and his pupils are evident. In the canvas under examination, observing the illustrative and drafting characteristics, we can detect clear similarities with the production of Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi, an artist of Bolognese origin but documented in Rome in 1627. It is possible to assert that the painter was one of the most successful landscape painters active around the middle of the century, and his work for the Falconieri, the Borghese and the Peretti-Montalto families proves this. The painting in the catalog finds interesting affinities with those in the Borghese Gallery, which, dated by documentary evidence to 1678, offer a useful chronological parameter.
