MALI - BAMANA people
SURUKU hyena mask, from the Koré society, with a black patina of great antiquity.
In spite of a lack at the level of the face such as a wound of war, it kept, if not more, its great beauty.
Pierre AMROUCHE, about the DURAND DESSERT collection, wrote superbly: "each object can have two faces, the one that the sculptor gave it and the one that time has given it. "the accidents, the manipulations, the wind, the rain, the xylophagous, are part of the autonomous life of the objects, the soul of their spirit, the sign of the existence of telluric forces which escape us, "the art of the time"".
This mask is an example, its broken mouth wound gives it great power, but the sculptor was a master.
H 52,5 cm.
