MALO Katsina Kachina with stick (Colton 130) Cottonwood (Populus Deltoides, also known as American poplar), pigments, plant remains. North America, United States, Arizona, Hopi. Wear and patina of age, reported base. H : 23 cm Around 1940/60 Provenance and geographical origin according to the owner : Taos, acquired in the 1970s. Helmet mask with a red and yellow particolored face in black frames, separated by a median line, the mouth in a tube, bearing a flower on the right temple and a remnant of a vegetal toupee on the left temple. The body, formerly painted in ochre, carries the arms together along the torso; the kilt carries a belt with a lateral ritual scarf with geometric patterns. The legs are separated. Described as early as 1894, then in 1903 by Fawkes, and by Stephen in 1936, Malo appears carrying a feathered stick and a rattle in regular dances.
