"The Geoffrin clock, a successful model", by Christian Baullez.
The young woman sitting on a small bench is reading a large book, her left arm
left arm resting on the dial. It is Madame Geoffrin,
born Marie-érèse Rodet (1699-1777). She held a famous literary salon
(See the book by Maurice Hamon,
"Madame Geoffrin - Femme d'influence, femme d'affaires au temps
of the Enlightenment" published by Fayard, 2010). She
symbolizes "l'Emploi du Temps", the second name given to this
model of clock.
The base is decorated with a frieze of interlacing foliage.
The dial has Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for
Arabic numerals for the minutes. This model created in 1757 for Madame
Geoffrin had a great success in the eighteenth century, which continued
throughout the nineteenth century ... My clock of Guyard :
it came back to me at 3000 livres because I made the model of it
model; it is the original one". However the models of the XVIIIth
remain much rarer. The back door is equipped with a
glass. Contrasted on the back plate and bears the number
3029. On the perimeter of the base plate, wear of gilding in
surrounding.
