Modernist vase; Catalonia, ca. 1910. Glazed ceramic and mahogany base. Measurements: 95 x 59 cm (vase); 79 x 40 cm (stand). Large ornamental vase in the Art Nouveau style, made of ceramic and decorated with high and low temperature enamels, applied in a style of great pictorialism, close to contemporary easel painting. It stands on a simple circular base, with a lower shelf that acts as a chambeada and three rectangular feet, slightly wider at the base for greater stability. The vase has a typology derived from the classical vase, with a slightly prominent circular foot, although integrated into the belly, a wide ovoid body with rounded and prominent shoulders, and a wide, straight neck ending in a flat mouth. This profile of flowing, uninterrupted lines allows us to appreciate more clearly the enamelled decoration, which is freely arranged on the surface of the vase, in an open, asymmetrical and naturalistic composition that is typically modernist, revealing the importance of Japanese influence in this language. The enamelled decoration depicts a carefully painted landscape in a twilight setting, with a highly naturalistic, impressionistic brushstroke and refined chromaticism. On the opposite side is a magnificent bouquet of flowers, painted with the same light, atmospheric, undone brushstrokes.
