The Italian designer Aldo Tura established a furniture production company in Lombardy in 1939. Working between the languages of Art Deco and modernism, Tura created unique high-end furniture and accessories, characterised by rich materials, sculptural forms and high-end craftsmanship. Tura's work has become a collector's item, especially examples with exotic finishes - such as eggshell, goatskin and parchment - in intense palettes of red, green and yellow. Tura was one of the most unique design talents of mid-century Italy, for in the post-war years, while many furniture makers were adjusting their production methods towards mass production, Tura remained committed to slow, traditional craftsmanship. He favoured intricate, complex forms and labour-intensive processes that could never be reproduced in a large-scale factory system. As a result, the number of Tura's works available on the vintage market remains limited. Today, Tura's company continues to produce high-end deco-style furniture in Lombardy, but much information about Tura himself has been lost to history. The Brooklyn Museum in New York holds a handful of Tura's designs that were originally displayed in the touring exhibition Italy at Work: Her Renaissance in Design Today.
