Pair of Louis XV style candlesticks; France, late 19th century. Bronze. Measurements: 29 x 16 cm. Pair of candlesticks made in bronze, the design is framed in the transition between the late baroque and the rococo. The model is the usual one along the baroque, a model of European origin characterised by a voluminous foot, big burner and a short, slightly disproportionate stem. As for the shaft structure, we see the baroque silhouette of curve and counter-curve, but the knot is now approaching the rococo inverted pear shape, although it still retains a clear cut at shoulder height. In the lighter we see a similar process, an almost completely sinuous silhouette in the rococo style, although still cut by the line that delimits the sub-cup, also differentiated at an ornamental level. The decoration is based on the use of helicoidal edges, which reflect the upward rotating movement typical of the Baroque style and visually unify the piece. Grooves and grooves were one of the main ornamental resources used in Baroque silverware, especially in its Classicism. The ornamental motifs are reminiscent of examples of decorative art from the Louis XV period, but reinterpreted to suit 19th-century aesthetic tastes.
