This tapestry tells us a mythological scene which takes place in Arcadia (Peloponnese region), a country which was celebrated, by the arts, as being the symbol of a preserved, wild and harmonious nature. In the flowery clearing of a deep forest, Alpheus, the river god, helped by a second, reveals to two Arcadian shepherds with their staff, the presence of the nymph Arethusa, changed into a spring by the goddess Artemisia who wanted to protect her, Alpheus having no cease to want to merge his waters with her. This happens under the impassive eye of grazing sheep and a shepherd's dog. A fortress appears on the hillside. Gallooned border. (Small wears)
