AURELIO TOLOSA Y ALSINA (Barcelona, 1861 - 1938). "Landscape. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 55 x 70 cm; 77 x 92 cm (frame). Aurelio Tolosa began his training with the French painter Justin Simon and was later a disciple of Modest Urgell. He devoted himself mainly to flower and landscape painting, as well as producing various designs for stained glass windows. He took part in several exhibitions held in Barcelona, competitions and group exhibitions such as the Liceu Exhibition of 1883, where he presented "Un país" ("A Country") and "Una marina" ("A Marina"). He was subsequently awarded prizes for his landscapes and vases at the Barcelona exhibitions of 1891 and 1892. He also took part in the National Exhibitions of 1890, 1892 and 1897 (honourable mention), presenting his works "Peonías", "Albores", "Flores de abril" and "Claveles". He also received an honourable mention at the Nationals of 1901 and 1904. In 1918 he exhibited some of his most important works, including "Primavera" (Spring), "Sol de mañana" (Morning Sun) and "Lavanderas de Cadaqués" (Laundresses of Cadaqués). It is also worth mentioning his participation in the group exhibitions held at the Galeries Layetanes in 1922 and 1927. He was also a member of the Artistic and Literary Society of Catalonia, and was awarded the gold medal and diploma of honour at the International Furniture Exhibition. In addition, Antoni Clavé was trained in his decorative and advertising painting workshop. Tolosa also imitated antique painting, tapestry and enamelling. He is currently represented in the Parliament of the Balearic Islands, as well as in various private collections.
