The trip to Italy of the Marquis de Sade: drawings by Jean Baptiste Tierce
Jean-Baptiste Tierce was apprenticed to Jean-Batiste-Marie Pierre in Paris in the 1770s.
the 1770s. He left for Italy in 1773 and settled in Naples in 1774. He met the
marquis de Sade in January 1776 when this one undertakes an exploration of the Neapolitan
Neapolitan region.
The Marquis de Sade left France in July 1775, in order to escape from the "affaire des
little girls". He stays in Italy under the name of the count of Mazan and meets on his arrival in Florence
in Florence the doctor Mesny with whom he befriends. He continues his stay in Rome where he
he attended the coronation of Pope Pius VI, then went down to Naples. At his arrival in Naples, the
marquis de Sade is welcomed by the son-in-law of the doctor Mesny, who is not other than the painter
Jean-Baptiste Tierce. Tierce then follows him in his exploration of the Neapolitan countryside and
sketches for the marquis a hundred landscapes on the motive.
Throughout his journey, the marquis de Sade undertakes a travelogue and
description of Italy. This "Journey in Italy", remained in the family archives, will be published
a first time in 1967, then a second time in 1995 with 107 reproductions of drawings
by Tierce, some of which we present here.
