Roman Follis: FL IVL CONSTANTINVS NOB C / PROVIDEN-TIAE CAES (SMNA)   Constantine II (337-340 AD) / Bronze / 19 mm / 2.8g   AV.: FL IVL CONSTANTINVS NOB C, head of Constantine II, laureate, left. RV.: PROVIDEN-TIAE CAES, camp gate with two turrets, without doors, with 7 stone layers; star above. SMNA in exergue.   In good condition.   Constantine II: The eldest son of Constantine the Great and Fausta, was elevated to the rank of Caesar as early as 317. In 328, under the supervision of his father and officials, he took charge of the western part of the empire (Gaul), where he resided in Augusta Treverorum, now Trier. There he successfully defended the borders against the Goths and the Alamanni. After the death of his father in 337, several members of his family were murdered, but the reasons for this purge are not clear. He finally had himself proclaimed Augustus together with his brothers Constantius II and Constans. After a meeting of the brothers in Viminatium, they divided the empire between them.   Provenance: Swiss private collection R. Bonsera, Basel. Purchased in around 2010 from the art market Basel.
