Roman Follis: CONSTAN-TINVS AVG / BEATA TRANQUILLITAS (PTR)   Constantine I (307-337 AD) / Bronze / 19 mm / 2.8g   AV.: CONSTAN-TINVS AVG, head of Constantine I, laureate, right, wearing consular robes and holding eagle-tipped scepter in his right hand. RV.: BEATA TRANQUILLITAS, Globe set on altar inscribed VO/TIS / XX; above, three stars. PTR in exergue.   In good condition.   Constantine I: Latin: Flavius Valerius Constantinus; 27 February c. 272 - 22 May 337, also known as Constantine the Great, was Roman emperor from 306 to 337 AD, and the first to convert to Christianity. Born in Naissus, Dacia Mediterranea (now Niš, Serbia), he was the son of Flavius Constantius, a Roman army officer of Illyrian origin who had been one of the four rulers of the Tetrarchy. Constantine served with distinction under the Roman emperors Diocletian and Galerius. He began his career campaigning in the eastern provinces before being recalled to the west (in 305 AD) to fight on the side of his father in Britain. After his father's death in 306, Constantine became emperor. He was acclaimed by his army at Eboracum (York), and emerged victorious from the civil wars against the emperors Maxentius and Licinius to become sole ruler of the Roman Empire in 324.   Provenance: Swiss private collection A.
