Denton Welch (1915-1948) Denton Welch (1915-1948) Figures in a street, c.1945 signed 'Denton Welch' l.r., pen and ink and watercolour 25.5 x 36.5cm Provenance: With the Redfern Gallery, London, 1996; with Wenlock Fine Art, Shropshire. Denton Welch was born in Shanghai and spent much of his childhood living in both China and England. He studied at Repton School alongside Roald Dahl, then trained as a painter at Goldsmiths. A life-changing accident when he was aged twenty left him partially paralysed and with other health complications. This likely increased his focus on writing and he published his first book 'Maiden Voyage' in 1943. The following year he wrote the novel 'In Youth is Pleasure', which also garnered him success and prestige as an author. Welch was championed by Edith Sitwell and John Lehmann. He continued to work as an artist throughout his writing career, often creating works with fantastical figures and narratives. Condition Report: Framed size 49 x 58.5cm Not viewed out of glazed frame. A vertical fold line to right side. Paper is clean and colours are fairly strong considering age of work.
